'When you recycle a plastic bottle, you're doing something good. When you recycle 111 of them, you're doing something great.'
See this fabulous chair! Made from 111 recycled plastic Coke bottles, the 111 Navy Chair®, is a special collaboration between Emeco and Coca-Cola. It took four years of research, design and materials testing to create this chair, which is a plastic version of the iconic (and my favourite) aluminium 1006 Navy® Chair. The chair debuted last month at the 2010 Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, and was launched yesterday in New York, exclusively at Design Within Reach.
Each 111 Navy Chair contains a mix of 60% recycled PET plastic, and a special combination of other materials including pigment and glass fibre for strength. The original 1006 Navy chair was designed for the US Navy in 1944, and other than its stylish good looks, was designed for strength, comfort and durability, with a life expectancy of around 150 years. Wonderfully ironic then, that the production of this chair is expected to keep around three million plastic Coke bottles (each with a landfill breakdown of around the same time frame) out of landfills each year. Coca-Cola, I salute your initiative!
The 111 Navy chair is available in six colours - Coca Cola Red, Snow, Flint, Grass, Charcoal and Persimmon. And each chair has that 'good to great' statement moulded underneath the seat, to remind us that we can all help to turn our bottles into something quite extraordinary.
How cool is that!

(P.S Thonet, the New Zealand stockists of Emeco, will have this fabulous chair available here mid to late June. I can't wait!)

How fantastic, what a great idea someone has come up with! About time though, hey? Now they just need to work out how to properly recycle all the other rubbish...
ReplyDeleteI love the colours, and the style is really funky.

Amanda, I love this! How gorgeous are these chairs, for more than just the aesthetic reasons! I love this initiative and just have to go and read more! Thanks for this fabulous post, hope you are having a great week ~ Tina xx
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous idea!
ReplyDeleteFantastic and what great colours. Good to see Coke doing something for the side of good not evil for a change. xoxo
ReplyDeleteHow lovely, and how conspicuously cleverly marketed. I bet they sell extraordinarily well, and boost the Coke feel-good factor. I nearly wish I drank it myself. They chose perfect colours, didn't they - striking and modern but not garish.
ReplyDeleteLove those colors, and the photo styling, too! Very chic (and sustainable - woo!)
ReplyDeleteHow awesome, I love those chairs. I hope when they come out they will be somewhat affordable, I would love to have a plastic version for outside. Thanks for sharing. Take Care, Carrie
